ON THIS DATE (36 YEARS AGO)
May 18, 1976 – Warren Zevon: Warren Zevon is released.
# ALL THINGS MUSIC PLUS+ 4.5/5

# Rolling Stone (see original review below)
Warren Zevon is the eponymous debut album from Warren Zevon, released on this date in May, 1976.
This album was recorded in 1975 and includes a "Who's Who" of guests - Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham, Rosemary Butler, Phil Everly, Glenn Frey, Bob Glaub, Don Henley, David Lindley, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Waddy Wachtel and Carl Wilson among others.
Zevon actually released a record "Wanted Dead or Alive" prior to his celebrated self-titled "debut," a record so bad that he took to touring with the Everly Brothers. Whatever he did on the road with them paid off. He returned to recording with bone-rattling West Coast tales of prostitutes, heroin addicts, outlaws and suicidal bar hoppers. Thus, Zevon went, with one record, from playing piano on "Bye Bye Love" to becoming supreme chronicler of L.A.'s underbelly.
Easily his richest and most consistent album, this is arguably the best place for the uninitiated to start. The deranged romp of "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" and the tongue in cheek masochism of "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" introduced the world at large to the darkly sardonic edge of the singer's muse. From the romanticized "Frank and Jesse James" to the starkly beautiful "Desperadoes Under the Eaves," the album rolls with an insightful (albeit sometimes crazed) sense of purpose.
ORIGINAL ROLLING STONE REVIEW
Warren Zevon's first Asylum album is a contemporary comedy-western about Los Angeles. In images that are often mordantly funny and detailed right down to specific place names, Zevon compiles a surrealistic vision of Hollywood that is one part Howard Hawks to three parts Nathaniel West. Albums with a Hollywood-western theme aren't new. But all the others have been made by die-hard romantics -- the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell. In refreshing contrast, Zevon works almost exclusively with irony and satire. The appearance of an L.A. singer/songwriter who dares to puncture the seriousness of the romantics but who is also musically sophisticated enough to work in their idiom is long overdue. A competent pianist and guitarist and a fine composer, Zevon's songs run the gamut from acoustic folk to hard rock. His best tunes even manage to use the romantic harmonies of Browne's and the Eagles' ballads to evoke pathos and humor simultaneously.
The album's first song, "Frank and Jesse James," portrays those outlaws as alienated political exiles who fought on the wrong side in the Civil War and were forever "misunderstood." In "Mama Couldn't Be Persuaded," a young man tells the story of his mother, who defied her own good sense, as well asher parents' wishes, to marry a compulsive gambler. Zevon views these reckless characters as ancestral archetypes for the self-destructive, self-deluded fantasists and vagrants who determine the ethos of modern L.A. Appropriately, both songs are quasi-traditional folk ballads, unlike anything else on the album.
Zevon's imitation American is provocative and well made and his contemporary social probes combine Shampoo's knowing hipness with an aesthetic view of the grotesque that's closer to Fellini than Warren Beatty. A rocker called "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," while humorously spoofing suicidal despair, likens sex-for-sport to brutal fights for survival ("She really worked me over good/She was just like Jesse James"). At the end, it introduces sadomasochism in a gleefully casual manner. In contrast, "The French Inhaler" is less ironic. The story of the sexual exploitation of a dumb starlet, the song ends with a jab at Norman Mailer for his literary exploitation of Marilyn Monroe.
"Mohammed's Radio," which sounds a lot like Jackson Browne's "The Late Show," has magnificent lyrics reminiscent of middle-period Dylan. Here, the image of "Mohammed's Radio" is an apt and ultimately mysterious metaphor for spiritual release in a city where "everybody's restless and they've got no place to go."
"Carmelita," the album's cosmic gem, tells of two losers ("the county won't give me no more methadone/And they cut off your welfare check") strung out on L.A.'s fringes. With its tacky semiflamenco guitar and sweet-sad hoot copped from Commander Cody's "Seeds and Stems (Again)," the song makes tragedy from farce and vice versa.
"Join Me in L.A.," a sleazy rock dirge, and "Desperados under the Eaves," deal ironically with L.A.'s apocalyptic self-image. The music of "Desperados" is so elegantly cinematic that at first it sounds like a totally serious end-of-the-world song. At least, that is, until the second verse when Zevon observes:
And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing
Until I pay my bill
Later, when Zevon cuts short the last verse with "I was listening to the air conditioner hum...," a chorus enters imitating air conditioning, a refrain that becomes quite similar to "Michael Row the Boat Ashore." The chorus, arranged by the Beach Boys' Carl Wilson to sound like an elegy for Western civilization emanating from an air conditioner, is the last and grandest surrealistic joke of the album.
The album has some minor problems. Jackson Browne's elaborate, star-studded production is conceptually right for Zevon, but the overall sound has the same somewhat flat, dull finish that is the chief flaw of Browne's own solo albums. More seriously, Zevon is a barely competent singer with an old cowpokey voice, like Browne with laryngitis. Zevon's style, however, is distinct. He delivers his material with just the right amount of yarn spinner's tongue-in-cheek.
Despite its imperfections, Warren Zevon is a very auspicious accomplishment. If it does not have the obvious commercial appeal of an Eagles album, on its own artistic terms it is almost a complete success. Who could have imagined a concept album about Los Angeles that is funny, enlightening, musical, at moments terrifying and above all funny?
~ Stephen Holden (July 15, 1976)

On the land we know as North America, there were approximately 400 distinct indigenous Nations. Of that number, 155 have documented multiple gender traditions. Two Spirit is a contemporary term that refers to those traditions where some individuals’ spirits are a blending of male and female spirit.
The existence of Two Spirit people challenges the rigid binary view of the world of the North American colonizers and missionaries, not just of a binary gender system, but a binary system of this or that, all together. The Two Spirits’ mere existence threatened the colonizers’ core beliefs; the backlash was violent. Sketches, housed at the New York City public library, depict Two Spirit people being attacked by colonizers’ dogs. Word of this brutal treatment spread quickly from nation to nation. Many nations decided to take actions to protect their honored and valued Two Spirit people. Some nations hid them by asking them to replace their dress, a mixture of men and women’s clothing, with the attire of their biological sex. After years of colonization, some of those very same nations denied ever having a tradition that celebrated and honored their Two Spirit people.
The Two Spirit tradition is primarily a question of gender, not sexual orientation. Sexual orientation describes the relationship a person of one gender has with another gendered person. Gender describes an individual’s expected role within a community.
Within traditional American Indian communities, there was an expectation that women farmed/gathered food and cooked; men hunted big game. Although there was division of labor along gender lines, there was no gender-role hierarchy. Within the American Indian social construct of gender, a community could not survive without both of the equal halves of a whole. The American Indian commitment to gender equality opened the door for the possibility of multiple genders, without the idea that a man was taking on a lesser gender by placing himself in a women’s role.
Gender Roles of Two Spirit People
People of Two Spirit gender functioned as crafts-people, shamans, medicinegivers, mediators, and/or social workers. In many American Indian communities, men and women styles of speech were distinct; sometimes even different dialects were spoken. The Two Spirit people knew how to speak both in the men and women’s ways. They were the only ones allowed to go between the men’s and the women’s camps. They brokered marriages, divorces, settled arguments, and fostered open lines of communication between the sexes.
Their proficiency in mediation often included their work as communicators between the seen (physical) and un-seen (spiritual) worlds. Many of the great visionaries, dreamers, shamans, or medicine givers were Two Spirit people. In some traditions, a war party could not be dispatched until their Two Spirit person consulted the spirits of the un-seen world and then gave their blessings. In the Lakota tradition, before any war party’s departure, the party preformed a dance with the Two Spirit person at the center of the circle to show their respect and honor.
It is traditional to present gifts at gatherings to those who exemplify the “spirit” of the community or who have done the most for the community. Two Spirit people were respected and honored with gifts when they attended gatherings. They did not keep the gifts, but passed them on to spread the wealth. In this respect, Two Spirit people were similar to modern day social workers.
When a family was not properly raising their children, the Two Spirit person would intervene and assume the responsibly as the primary caretaker. Sometimes, families would ask the Two Spirit person for help rearing their children. This unique role of social worker was specific to Two Spirit people, for they had an excess of material wealth as a result of the gifts they received.
Remembering Our Traditions
Since the time of colonization many American Indians have forgotten the “old” way. Many converted to a Western religion, which did not accept traditional spirituality and community structures.
However, there are groups of elders and activists that have quietly kept the Two Spirit tradition alive. In some nations that have revived this tradition, or brought it once again into the light, Two Spirit people are again fulfilling some of the roles and regaining the honor and respect of their communities.
The Two Spirit tradition is a very rich one that deserves a closer examination. The LGBTI activists engaged in achieving equality for all should remember that there was a time when people who engaged in same-sex relationships were accepted and honored for their special qualities.
Two Spirit people are a part of the fabric of this land, and we stand here today as a testament of our collective strength and fortitude.

Attention: message is for Sandra Parsons. Please inform her that I would like a response to this post since I was unable to tag her name.
Sandra,
Since you posted this in the group and immediately left, I would like to give you the opportunity to answer the question that I have asked. I honestly want to understand what compelled you to make this post, given all of the prior drama just moments earlier.
May I ask, did it make you feel good about yourself as a human being, or deep down did you feel that it was wrong? When you likely bragged about it to your other friends, did that validate your self worth as a woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter? Do you think along those lines before you set out to harm or provoke others?
How much do you love your family? I love mine dearly, my entire life would mean nothing without them. So, I treat others kindly, just as I would want my loved ones to be treated.
I am a mother with three beautiful children. Today is my 10 year wedding anniversary and I could not be more prouder of that fact. My husband is a wonderful man and we are inseparable. I am sure you were not aware of this information, but your post was the most hurtful action thus far that has taken place today. I'm not saying that it has ruined my day, but it definitely did not help it either.
The reason why yours hurt the most? There was intentional malice behind it, which leads me to beleive that you do not consider how your actions really affects another individual.
I did not see the humor in it at all and for me to even think about doing that to another group would shame me to the core. I strive to be a decent and caring human being and I have faith that others do too. But, when something like this occurs, reality check slaps me hard across the face.
I pray that you will do not do this to anyone else, especially the ones from my group. Please, let this be laid to rest. I want to have fun. It boosts my spirits and in turn I am able to boost the spirits of others.
Please take into consideration how you are doing more harm than good to others who may be living a really miserable life. I am very grateful that I have it good, but the majority of this fandom does not, and that may very well apply to you, IDK.
What was your motivation? Was it truly accomplished? Can you look at your loved ones in the face, the family who may see you as someone special, knowing that you hurt a group of women on FB? How do you think they would respond? Lastly, were your actions something that you could be proud of and take pride in?
I have marked your posts with lines, so that you can re read what you've posted. When you have, tell me how that made you feel. Tell me how you think it was right. Tell me why you set out to do this type of harm. My question to you is at the bottom if you so choose to skip the rest.
I respectfully ask that you respond to this post.

Bernadette Lentini-Jones Hi Sandra Parsons! I am sure you are a very nice person but I do think this comment was a bit inciteful of a riot and inflammatory. And maybe even a bit spiteful. Would you be so kind as to delete it so we can put this fiasco behind us and talk about Forbidden Twilight Fanfiction? I'd very much appreciate it and I'm sure there other like-minded members who feel the same. Thanks and have a good night!

Ulrike Klement I "met" Rob in Berlin on February 17th twice... Once at the Hyatt where the press conference was and once later at the non-existent red carpet. I was kinda drunk (Hey, it was freezing!!!) and dropped my freshly signed autograph. All I could say was "Where's it gone?" (yeah, coherent me ;-) but he was nice enuff to pick it up and give it back to me. lol

Did it even occur to you that the person or persons who reported BellaRoseSmith are the ones that have left the group? So, how can you show your face in front of 600 other people and act as if we are all suspect?
Likely, the suspect was looong gone before you arrived. Think before you act. If you need more help with making such a decision, ask someone for advice who can give you proper direction. I would like to beleive that that my words and advice are not falling on deaf ears. I hold out for hope, always.

Flowering cherry trees have been symbols of Japan’s friendship to the people of America for 100 years.
In 1912, over 3,000 cherry trees were gifted from the City of Tokyo to the City of Washington, D.C. as a symbol of lasting friendship from the people of Japan. Since that time, Japanese organizations have made gifts of cherry trees to America to commemorate significant milestones in the relationship between Japan and the United States... Very cool :) I love Cherry Blossoms "Sakura"
Kompanyang balasubas dapat kastiguhin (2)
by Lily Reyes Jan 16, 2012 6:43pm HKT
oOo
Para sa inyong mga reklamo, suhestiyon at komento ay mag-text lang sa 09155683000 o kaya ay mag-email sa lily_reyes13@yahoo.com.

Panoramic view from the Symbolic Mountain at the Japanese Gardens. The view takes in the gardens and the plains of the Cowra district across to the nearby mountains.
During World War II, a prisoner of war (POW) camp near the town of Cowra in New South Wales, Australia was the site of one of the largest prison escapes of the war, on 5 August 1944. During the Cowra breakout and subsequent rounding up of POWs, four Australian soldiers and 231 Japanese soldiers died and 108 prisoners were wounded. The Japanese War Cemetery holding the dead from the Breakout was tended to after WWII by members of the Cowra RSL and ceded to Japan in 1963. In 1971 the Cowra Tourism Development decided to celebrate this link to Japan, and proposed a Japanese Garden for the town. The Japanese government agreed to support this development as a sign of thanks for the respectful treatment of their war dead; the development also received funding from the Australian government and private entities.
The garden was designed by Ken Nakajima (1914–2000), a world-renowned designer of Japanese gardens at the time. The first stage was opened in 1979, with a second stage opened in 1986.
The gardens were designed in the style of the Edo period and are a kaiyū-shiki or strolling garden. They are designed to show all of the landscape types of Japan. At five hectares (12 acres), the Cowra Japanese Garden is the largest Japanese garden in the Southern Hemisphere. An annual Sakura Matsuri (cherry blossom festival) is a major event in Cowra's tourism calendar and is held in the gardens during September.
[edit]Brazil
Cherry blossom in the Botanical Garden of Curitiba, Southern Brazil
With the Japanese diaspora to Brazil, many immigrants brought seedlings of cherry trees. In the Parana State (in southern Brazil), many cities received many of these immigrants, who planted the trees, as in Apucarana,[18] Maringá, Cascavel[19] and especially in the capital city of Curitiba.[20]
In the capital city of Parana, the first seedlings were taken by Japanese immigrants in the first half of the 20th century, but began to be planted in large quantities from the 1990s, with the opening of the Botanical Garden of Curitiba.[20] Now the seedlings are produced by the city and used in afforestation[21] of streets and squares - as in the Japanese Square, where have more than 30 cherry trees around the square sent by the Japanese Empire to Curitiba.[22]
[edit]Canada
Vancouver, BC is famous for its thousands of cherry blossom trees lining many streets and in many parks, including Queen Elizabeth Park and Stanley Park. Vancouver holds the annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival every year.[23] High Park in Toronto, Ontario features many Somei-Yoshino cherry trees (the earliest species to bloom and much loved by the Japanese for their fluffy white flowers) that were given to Toronto by Japan in 1959. Through the Sakura Project, the Japanese Embassy donated a further 34 cherry trees to High Park in 2001, plus cherry trees to various other locations like Exhibition Place, McMaster University, York University and the University of Toronto's main and Scarborough campuses.
[edit]China
The cherry trees naturally grow in China. However, the two most famous cherry blossom parks in China reflect Japan's brief occupation of parts of China during the first half of the 20th century or the donation from Japan thereafter:
Longwangtang Cherry Blossom Park in Lushun, Dalian, Liaoning
Wuhan University in Donghu District, Wuhan, Hubei
[edit]Germany
The cherry blossom is a major tourist attraction in Germany's Altes Land orchard region. The largest Hanami in Germany, in Hamburg, with Japanese-style fireworks, organized by the German-Japanese society, draws tens of thousands spectators every spring.
[edit]South Korea
Watching of cherry blossom was introduced to Korea during Japanese rule.[24][25] The festivals continued even after the Japanese surrendered in WWII, but have been contentious, and many cherry trees have been destroyed because they were seen as symbols of the occupation.[26] However, there has been considerable confusion about the origin of the cultivated Japanese cherry trees and the differences between them and native Korean trees.[27][28] Certain trees at Seoul's Gyeongbok Palace were cut down to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Japanese surrender in World War II.[29] Although Cherry blossoms are already indigenous to Korea, Japan had planted trees on sacred and offensive locations in the Palace. Once the offending trees were cut down the festival continued with the indigenous trees. The cherry blossom festival at Gyeongbok Palace is one of a number of such festivals across Korea and is prominently advertised to tourists.
In 1933, the Japanese botanist Koizumi Genichi reported that the Japanese Sakura (Somei Yoshino) originated on Jeju-do island (Quelpaert).[30] In 1916, Ernest Henry Wilson had thought that "Japanese Sakura (Somei Yoshino)" was a crossbreed of the wild species of Japanese Sakura ("Edo higan" and "Oshima zakura").[31] In 1991, Professor of Tsukuba University Iwasaki Fumio reported that "Japanese Sakura (Somei Yoshino) originated around 1720-1735 by the artificial crossing in Edo (Tokyo)."[32] Recent studies conducted on the comparison of Korean and Japanese cherry blossoms concluded that the two trees can be categorized as distinct species,[33] but the Korean species apparently has not yet been given a scientific name.
[edit]Turkey
In 2005, Japanese cherry trees were presented by Japan to the Nezahat Gokyigit Botanical Garden in Istanbul, Turkey. Each tree represents one sailor of Ertugrul Frigate which was the a famous frigate of the Ottoman/Turkish navy. She had encountered a typhoon on the way back from a goodwill visit to Japan in 1890. That heavy weather condition caused her to sink. That disaster resulted with unfortunate loss of 587 Ottoman/Turkish sailors. That unfortunate occurrence is being remembered in every anniversary. The Japanese Cherry Trees represent memory of those passed away and provide remembrance.
[edit]United Kingdom
Batsford Arboretum in Gloucestershire holds the national collection of Japanese village cherries, sato-sakura group.[34] Keele University in Staffordshire has one of the UK's largest collections of flowering cherries, with more than 150 varieties.[35]
[edit]United States
Cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C.
Japan gave 3,020 cherry blossom trees as a gift to the United States in 1912 to celebrate the nations' then-growing friendship, replacing an earlier gift of 2000 trees which had to be destroyed due to disease in 1910. These trees were planted in Sakura Park in Manhattan and line the shore of the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. (see West Potomac Park). The gift was renewed with another 3,800 trees in 1965.[36][37] The cherry blossom trees continue to be a popular tourist attraction (and the subject of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival) when they reach full bloom in early spring. Also, Balboa Park of San Diego has 2,000 cherry blossom trees that blossom in mid to late March. In Los Angeles, over 2,000 trees are located at Lake Balboa in Van Nuys. These trees were donated by an anonymous Japanese benefactor and were planted in 1992. They originated from a single parent tree and were developed to grow in warm climates.[38] Philadelphia is also home to over 2000 flowering Japanese cherry trees, half of which were a gift from the Japanese government in 1926 in honor of the 150th anniversary of American independence, with the other half planted by the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia between 1998 and 2007. Philadelphia's cherry blossoms are located within Fairmount Park, and the annual Subaru Cherry Blossom Festival of Greater Philadelphia celebrates the blooming trees. The University of Washington in Seattle also has cherry blossoms in its Quad.
Cherry blossoms in Newark, New Jersey
Other US cities have an annual Cherry Blossom Festival (or Sakura Matsuri), including the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia, which features over 300,000 cherry trees. Belleville, Bloomfield, and Newark, New Jersey celebrate the annual Branch Brook Park Cherry Blossom Festival in April, which attracts thousands of visitors from the local area, Japan, and India. As of April 2009, Branch Brook Park has a cherry tree collection with over 4,000 cherry blossoms in more than fourteen different varieties.[39] Branch Brook Park will soon have more flowering cherry trees than Washington, D.C., thanks to an ongoing replanting program. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City also has a large, well-attended festival.[40] Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the site of the peace conference that produced the Treaty of Portsmouth, for which the original Washington, DC cherry trees were given in thanks. Several cherry trees planted on the bank of the tidal pond next to Portsmouth City Hall were the gift of Portsmouth's Japanese sister city of Nichinan—the hometown of Marquis Komura Jutarō, Japan's representative at the conference.[41]

Pickled blossoms
A cup of sakurayu
Cherry blossoms and leaves are edible and both are used as food ingredients in Japan:
The blossoms are pickled in salt and Umezu (Ume vinegar), and is used for coaxing out flavor in Wagashi, (a traditional Japanese confectionery,) or Anpan, (a Japanese sweet bun, most-commonly filled with red bean paste.)
Salt-pickled blossoms in hot water is called Sakurayu, and is drunk at festive events like weddings in place of Green tea.
The leaves, mostly from the Ōshima cherry because of the softness, are also pickled in salted water and used for Sakuramochi.
Since the leaves contain Coumarin, however, it is not recommended that one eats them in great quantities, due to its toxicity.

The future looked so bright...but that was a long time ago. Filth and slime have infested these streets like a virus. They once called Sakura the city of the future, but it has become an elaborate maze of housing projects and slums. The streets have been taken hostage by constantly feuding gangs. The Skabs, The Black Lotus, The Shadows, and The Tyrants use violence to control the delicate balance of anarchy and terror. This is Street War. http://streetwar.bandcamp.com/album/street-war 4 track album

NMSP forms peace delegation
Thursday, 26 January 2012 12:22 Kun Chan
(Mizzima) – New Mon State Party Vice Chairman Nai Rao Sa will lead a delegation for a second round of peace talks at Mawlamyaing in Mon State on February 1.
NMSP Secretary-General Nai Hong Sar“Our posture is the same as before,” NMSP Secretary-General Nai Hong Sar told Mizzima. “We want to talk about a nationwide cease-fire. Stopping the fighting is not the main thing. The main thing is to hold a political dialogue.”
On January 20, NMSP chairman Nai Htaw Mon said in his closing speech at the 6th Mon National Conference that it was not difficult to agree to a cease-fire with the Burmese government, but it was difficult to hold a political dialogue.
Two member groups of the United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC), the Chin National Front and the Karen National Union, have signed cease-fire agreements with the Burmese government.
“The UNFC turned into a paper tiger, so it’s not easy to promote the interests of all ethnic people,” Nai Hong Sar told the Mon National Conference.
The UNFC was formed on February 17, 2011, as an ethnic alliance against the Burmese government’s military attacks and political pressure. The UNFC comprises six dedicated member groups and six associated member groups.
Before the NMSP has peace talk with the Burmese government the NMSP delegates will seek advice from Mon political and social organizations inside Burma, Nai Hong Sar Pon Khaing said.
NMSP central executive committee members met at party headquarters at Ye Chaung Phya and formed the delegation on Tuesday.
Delegates are party Vice Chairman Nai Rao Sa, central executive Nai Tala Nyi, central executive Nai Lari Ga Kaung, central committee member Nai Aye Mon (Mawlamyaing District chairman), central committee member Nai Banyar Lel (Dawei District chairman), central committee member Nai Aye Ka (Thaton District secretary) and NMSP central military committee Lieutenant Colonel Nai Banyar Channun. http://www.mizzima.com/news/inside-burma/6486-nmsp-forms-peace-delegation.html

Burma ‘has a high growth potential’: IMF
Thursday, 26 January 2012 16:25 Mizzima News
(Mizzima) – After a two-week assessment period, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) team says Burma has the potential to become “the next economic frontier in Asia.”
Meral Karasulu, the deputy division chief of the Asia and Pacific Department at the International Monetary Fund, who led the IMF assessment team, said in a statement released on Wednesday: “Burma has a high growth potential and could become the next economic frontier in Asia, if it can turn its rich natural resources, young labor force, and proximity to some of the most dynamic economies in the world, into its advantage.”

She said the process of upgrading Burma's antiquated financial system has already begun with recent changes in the exchange rate and restrictions on current international payments and transfers. The IMF team studied current processes and analyzed factors that could streamline and enhance Burma’s financial system, including aspects of its budget expenditures.
“As this essential process continues, channeling the reform momentum to improving monetary and fiscal management and to structural reforms would allow taking full advantage of the positive effects of exchange rate unification,” she said.
Karasulu said modernizing Burma’s economy would require changes to enhance the business and investment climate, modernizing the financial sector, and further liberalizing trade and foreign direct investment.
She said Burma’s real GDP growth is expected to increase to 5½ per cent in FY2011/12 and 6 percent in FY2012/13, driven by commodity exports and higher investment supported by robust credit growth and improved business confidence.
“Inflation, projected at 4.2 percent for FY2011/12, is expected to pick up to 5.8 per cent in FY2012/13 as the recent decline in food prices phases out,” she said.
She noted that the parallel market exchange rate of the kyat has appreciated by about 32 per cent in nominal effective terms since end-FY2009/10. The appreciation pressures are primarily due to large foreign inflows into the economy, which cannot find an outlet due to exchange restrictions on current international payments and transfers, she said.
The technical work by the Central Bank of Myanmar (CBM) is already under way to establish the necessary market structure. Ultimately, the unification of the exchange rate would require moving away from the “export first” policy. In light of the appreciation pressures, she said certain exchange restrictions can be removed immediately, for example, by allowing the use of all foreign currency bank account balances for imports, easing import licensing requirements and access to the newly established foreign exchange retail counters.
“A successful exchange rate unification would require improvements in all areas of macroeconomic management,” she noted. “This will have to start with establishing a monetary policy framework to focus on price stability. The authorities’ plan to grant operational autonomy and accountability to CBM is a welcome first institutional step towards this goal.”
Noting Burma’s recent reduction in interest rates, she said, “We do not see room for further interest rate cuts in the near term in light of the buoyant growth expectations and the inflation outlook. Within the current regulatory constraints on financial intermediation and impediments to productive investment, lower real interest rates would risk channeling savings to potentially speculative outlets, such as real estate.”
Stimulating productive investment is now resting on structural policies to reduce barriers to private sector development and improve financial intermediation, she said.
“The discussion of the 2012/13 budget in the new Parliament provides a historic opportunity to redefine national spending priorities and bring fiscal transparency,” she said. “We welcome the authorities’ plans to reorient spending to health and education, while targeting a moderate fiscal deficit, which we project to be about 4.6 percent of GDP, about 1 percent lower than the last year’s deficit. A prudent fiscal policy is essential to maintain macroeconomic stability, especially during the exchange rate unification process.
She sad overall, Burma’s fiscal balance is expected to improve in the medium term, but mainly due to new gas exports from the Shwe and Zawtika projects once they come on line.
“These additional revenues should be used to build human capital and infrastructure,” she said. “These are key priorities to alleviate poverty and reduce bottlenecks to industrialization,” she said. “The sizable development needs of Myanmar would require additional fiscal revenues, primarily from non-resource based sources, to safeguard fiscal sustainability and prevent boom-and-bust cycles associated with fluctuations in commodity prices. There is room to increase revenues by improved tax policies that should emphasize direct taxation over indirect taxes to protect the poor.”
“The adoption of a market-determined exchange rate in SEEs’ operations would allow better assessment of their performance, and provide an opportunity to accelerate SEE reforms. These efforts should focus on containing their losses by gradually reducing regressive subsidies, which benefit higher income groups, to protect the most vulnerable poor.
A key to Burma’s growth potential lies in more banks, she said. “Modernization of the financial system should be expedited to facilitate broad-based growth. Improvements to financial intermediation should begin by phasing out the deposit-to-capital ratio and expanding the list of collateral, including to all crops. Expansion of bank networks, especially in rural areas, is essential to increase access to finance. Nurturing a stronger commercial banking culture requires price competition. Interest rate liberalization started with some freedom in setting deposit rates, and should be extended to loan products. A level playing field between state and private banks, including in the areas of regulation and supervision, is critical to promote competition.”
Allowing joint ventures with foreign banks would expedite the transfer technology and prepare the sector for Asean financial integration in 2015, she said.
Another key reform area lies in he agriculture sector, which needs more credit to increase productivity and improve rural livelihoods.
“The planned land reform provides a unique opportunity, and should ensure that land titles of farmers can be used as collateral. However, credit alone will not suffice to increase rural growth, which is essential to alleviate poverty,” she said. Investment in rural infrastructure, including through community-driven development initiatives, and spending on health and education, are also essential. http://www.mizzima.com/business/6490-burma-has-a-high-growth-potential-imf.html

EU mulls aid boost to spur Burma reform

The EU could channel $US197 million in aid to Burma to encourage greater reform (Reuters)
The European Union is mulling a €150 million ($US197 million) aid package to help Burma’s new army-backed government continue on the path of reforms, EU diplomats said Wednesday.
A possible package, focused on health, education, agriculture and institutional capacity-building, was discussed by EU foreign ministers at talks in Brussels on Monday, said a source close to the matter who asked not to be identified.
At the talks, EU ministers agreed on the immediate lifting of travel bans on Burmese leaders as a first step towards easing sanctions against the country of 60 million people.
Welcoming “the remarkable programme of political reform” undertaken by the nominally-civilian government, the 27-nation bloc said further positive steps on the road to political change “would lead to the further easing or lifting of the restrictive measures.”
It called for the unconditional release of remaining political prisoners “within the next few months” and the “free and fair” conduct of the 1 April elections, which will see a historic bid for parliament by democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi.
At stake are embargos on arms deliveries, logging and mining while the assets of more than 900 firms and utilities have been frozen. http://www.dvb.no/news/eu-mulls-aid-boost-to-spur-burma-reform/19943

Militants fire on Thai village, killing two
By MAHN SAIMON

Shooting took place 10 miles south of Nu Po refugee camp in Thailand's western Umphang district (DVB)
Armed men purported to be from Burma killed a man and women and left a teenage girl injured after opening fire on a village in western Thailand, close to the Nupo refugee camp.
The men arrived at Pankhalae village on Tuesday evening and peppered a number of houses with bullets, residents said. The identity of the militants has not been confirmed, but Thai media reported they were from Burma.
A Thai couple died on the spot and a 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital in the border town of Mae Sot. Medics say she is in a stable condition. The motive behind the shootings is unclear.
Pankhalae resident Nai Chetchawan told reporters there were 10 to 15 armed men involved in the attack, and pools of blood were still visible yesterday where the three were shot.
Thai authorities have since tightened security around the village, which lies in Umphang district south of Mae Sot and which borders Burma.
Militants from Burma have been known to cross over the border to carry out operations in Thailand. In January 2010, members of the then-Burmese junta aligned Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) shot a Thai village chief, leaving him seriously injured.
The porous border between the two countries is a source of concern for Thailand, particularly given the vast quantities of illegal drugs that flow in from Burma each year. http://www.dvb.no/news/militants-fire-on-thai-village-killing-two/19939

Future of UN probe into Burma in doubt
By HANNA HINDSTROM
Published: 26 January 2012
The future of a UN inquiry into possible war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Burmese regime has been thrown into doubt after a number of one-time supporters of a probe, including Britain and the US, appear to have retreated in the wake of reforms made by the new government.
Altogether 16 governments threw their weight behind a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) first mooted by UN Special Rapporteur to Burma Tomas Ojea Quintana. But the US was the first to publicly drop its support, with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggesting during her December 2011 visit that Washington now favours a wait-and-see approach.
She told reporters following the visit that “it’s important to try to give the new government and the opposition a chance to demonstrate they have their own approach toward achieving [accountability for past state crimes]”.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon announced yesterday that he will visitBurma“in the near future” and confirmed the appointment of his chief of staff, Vijay Nambiar, as special envoy to the country.
It is as yet unclear how prominently the discussion of human rights will feature on the secretary general’s agenda when he visits, with the trip more likely to focus on positive engagement. Ban has previously been criticised for failing to vocally back a CoI on Burma, which would investigate abuses committed by the army and sanctioned by the regime.
A number of governments who supported the now CoI now feel they should gauge the outcome of Burma’s reform programme before pressing ahead with an inquiry, but the about-face has drawn criticism.
“It’s unfortunate that the 16 countries who stated their support for a CoI are now temporarily retreating from that support in the hope that the government pursues some mechanism for accountability for past abuses and, crucially, takes steps to end impunity and ongoing violations,” David Mathieson, Burma researcher at Human Rights Watch, said.
The international community has broadly welcomed the positive changes seen to be happening in Burma, including the release of political prisoners, easing of media restrictions and ceasefire discussions with rebel factions. Earlier this week the EU agreed to begin easing sanctions against Burma and the US is set to review theirs immediately after the 1 April by-elections.
Some critics have said however that the response is premature and done with disproportionate enthusiasm. Even if the main opposition party, the National League for Democracy, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, wins every available seat in the April vote, it will struggle to challenge the parliamentary supremacy of the military-backed government.
Mark Farmaner, director of Burma Campaign UK, said however that a CoI can remain on the table and “be revived very quickly at any time”.
“If there are genuine domestic efforts to achieve justice and accountability, and they have the support of society in Burma, including ethnic people, then the UK is likely to support that process,” he said.
The hurdles a UN inquiry into Burma would face are daunting, not least because the current constitution provides blanket immunity to all former and serving military generals.
Aung San Suu Kyi has voiced support for the creation of a Truth Commission, but even that may be a distant prospect as the international community looks keener to encourage Burma’s ongoing reforms rather than punish it for the crimes of the past. http://www.dvb.no/news/future-of-un-probe-into-burma-in-doubt/19947

In Myanmar, a "sham" parliament stirs to life
ReutersBy Jason Szep | Reuters – 2 hours 13 minutes ago
NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (Reuters) - In Myanmar's sprawling parliamentary complex, lawmakers flexed their newly democratic muscles on Thursday. Some drafted anti-graft legislation for one of the world's most corrupt nations or clamoured for transparency on a typically secret national budget.
Others wanted answers from the government: why are train lines across the country woefully inefficient? Will the government move faster to revamp clearer foreign-exchange rate laws and hold companies to task for shabby infrastructure on state contracts?
Derided as a well-choreographed sham in one of the world's most authoritarian countries when it opened a year ago, Myanmar's parliament began a third session on Thursday with feisty stirrings of democracy, under pressure to accelerate economic and political reforms that could soon convince the West to lift decades-old sanctions.
The main legislation up for debate requires the government to seek parliamentary approval for its budget. That alone is a significant change for Myanmar, where past military regimes drew up spending plans in secrecy, often carving out largesse for the army, which handed power to a nominally civilian government in March last year.
In the cavernous hallways of the lower house and the gilded main legislative chamber, legislators expressed unvarnished views, including some scathing criticism of government policy by those in the opposition.
It wasn't always this way.
"When we first came to parliament, we were worried we might be arrested," said U Ba Shin, a member of the Rakhine Nationalities Development Party, a major ethnic party that won nine of the lower house's 440 seats in the first general election in two decades in November 2010.
"Now there is less fear among the people. But many people still don't know their rights or speak their minds in parliament. There is big room for improvement."
Myanmar's purpose-built capital, Naypyitaw, has been a curiosity since it was built from scratch seven years ago, a virtual fortress where the then-military rulers of the former Burma isolated themselves some 320 km (200 miles) from the largest city, Yangon.
Bestowed with manicured, heavily watered lawns and forbidding stone walls, Naypyitaw bears no resemblance to the rest of the country, one of Asia's poorest, including nearby villages of mostly thatched wooden huts. Parliament's 31 buildings with pagoda-style roofs are its main attraction. Its wide boulevards and streets are eerily quiet.
In addition to the lower house there is a 224-seat senate. There are also 14 assemblies spread across the country.
"DON'T BE SCARED"
But changes inside the Hluttaw, or legislative chamber, are at the heart of the most dramatic reforms since the army took power in a 1962 coup and ushered in five decades of unbroken military rule that ended with the 2010 elections.
Shwe Mann, speaker of the house and a member of the military-backed dominant party that won the election, encouraged lawmakers to speak their minds on at least three occasions in the second session of parliament, from August 22 to November 25.
Shwe Mann's call for openness is in stark contrast to a year ago, when he was the powerful third-in-command of a much-feared junta that brutally crushed dissenting voices.
"He is trying very hard to put this democratic process in the parliament. He has been saying when we hold open voting 'You can openly show your opinion. Don't be scared'," said Sai Saung Si, 65, a member of parliament from northern Shan State and vice-chairman of the Shan Nationalities Development Party, that won 18 lower house seats in the election.
Sai Saung Si regularly voices the concerns of his constituency, including illegal seizures of land by companies or the army that went on for years unchecked.
"In the past, it would get taken away and people wouldn't know where to go to complain. But now we raise it in parliament. Seizing the land is not according to the law ... they must give it back to the people," he said in an interview.
Overtures by the government in recent months have included calls for peace with ethnic minority guerrilla groups, some tolerance of criticism, an easing of media controls, the legalisation of labour unions and more communication with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who was released in 2010 after spending 15 of the past 20 years in detention.
But there is plenty of work to do and challenges ahead. Parliamentary politics is clearly a new phenomenon. Just ask the men in green.
Sitting on the right flank of the lower-house chamber are military men in fatigues. A quarter of lower house seats are reserved for the military.
And there are other conservative pockets of resistance to reforms, say legislators, although President Thein Sein stressed last week in an interview with the Washington Post that his government had "no intention to draw back" on reform.
"It is not at all impossible for the reforms to be reversed," said Sean Turnell, an economist at Macquarie University in Sydney who closely follows Myanmar.
"There are significant groups that are in opposition to some of the reforms but overall we are in a very much different space than we were only a matter of six months ago."
He described the first legislative session convened by the former military junta in January last year as "a mockery of a parliament". But there were flickers of change in the second session after the junta formally ceded power.
"The second session started to behave like a parliament. It was no longer a vehicle purely of the president or the military. It had a degree of independence. We are looking now to the third session to see which one was representative -- the first session or the second."
BARRIERS TO PROGRESS
It is a crucial question for investors who see plenty of opportunities as Myanmar begins to opens up.
But barriers to progress are formidable: U.S. sanctions, an incoherent exchange rate regime, woeful infrastructure, weak investment laws, a crippled banking system, decades of mismanagement and a shortage of skilled workers.
"Economic reform, if anything now, is beginning to lag behind the political reform," said Turnell, adding that investors were waiting for a long-overdue foreign investment-protection law to snake through parliament.
"We have yet to see it. I am a little bit worried about that. It is a law that needs to get through but there is still a little bit of debate about it.
"When something like that does pass, that will be quite a signal that real economic reform is under way."
Some see that change happening if Suu Kyi wins a seat in the lower house in April by-elections.
"When she comes to the parliament, if she raises one issue, and this issue is very beneficial to the country, then who will dare go against it?" said Sai Saung Si.

Bitter political rivals in Washington find rare, unconventional cause to rally around: Myanmar
By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, January 26, 2:39 PM
WASHINGTON — Partisan squabbling has hobbled the business of government in Washington, but on one foreign policy issue at least, Democrats and Republicans appear willing to set aside their differences and get things done. It is Myanmar.
The Obama administration has support from key Republicans to restore full diplomatic relations and contemplate easing sanctions against the country also known as Burma, reversing two decades of U.S. isolation of a reviled military regim.
Primarily that is because the president has political cover from a slight figure idolized on both sides of the political aisle in Washington: democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
“She’s really the key figure,” said Walter Lohman, director of Asian studies at the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank. “As long as they stay close to her, I don’t see any controversy.”
Standing up for Nobel peace laureate Suu Kyi has long been a pillar of Washington’s policy toward Myanmar. The administrations of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush both urged the military to honor the rejected 1990 election victory by Suu Kyi’s party. They pursued policies that left the ruling junta an international outlier.
That was an uncontroversial stance, backed by other Western governments, and a relatively painless one for Washington because of the limited American business and strategic interests in the country. In recent years, however, misgivings about emerging superpower China’s pervasive influence over its southern neighbor have given traction to the argument that the U.S. should be more engaged.
While there is far more bipartanship on U.S. foreign policy than on domestic issues, Myanmar is unusual to the extent that influential Republicans and Democrats alike appear on the same page as the White House. On other areas of foreign policy where there is broad agreement, differences in nuance and tactics cause divisions.
For example, the U.S. remains the staunchest international ally of Israel but Republicans accuse Obama of being too sympathetic to Palestinians. Despite billions in weapon sales to Taiwan, lawmakers of both parties have said it is not enough. Obama also faces bipartisan demands to punish China for keeping its currency undervalued.
The U.S. first applied sanctions on arms sales to Myanmar after its bloody suppression of a democracy uprising in 1988. Republican and Democratic lawmakers have since tightened restrictions to cover political, economic and trade ties, making them among the stiffest Washington has against a foreign government.
“In many respects, most of our major policy initiatives were designed and implemented by the legislative branches, so there will need to be partnership in place as we go forward,” Kurt Campbell, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asia, said last week.
The most prominent voice in Congress on Myanmar has been the top Republican in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, a staunch advocate of Suu Kyi’s cause for years. He has emerged an unlikely supporter of the administration’s engagement strategy, which has gained traction since the military staged fresh but flawed elections in November 2010, then freed the opposition leader and began releasing political prisoners. http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/bitter-political-rivals-in-washington-find-rare-unconventional-cause-to-rally-around-myanmar/2012/01/26/gIQAL7kBSQ_story.html

McConnell wrote in a newspaper commentary that according to Suu Kyi and others he met, Myanmar appears to have made more progress in the past six months than in the previous five decades of military rule. He concluded it was too soon to lift sanctions but was open to rewarding the government for further reforms, saying he would take his cue from Suu Kyi.
It is unusual for McConnell to endorse an administration initiative with such enthusiasm, especially in an election year. During 2011, Republican opposition made it a struggle for Obama even to keep government running and raise the debt ceiling, and McConnell has said his single most important goal is the make Obama a one-term president.
Obama's Republican rival in the 2008 presidential election, Sen. John McCain, visited Myanmar this week and struck a similar note to McConnell's. Like the administration, both the Republican senators are watching to see whether by-elections April 1, in which Suu Kyi is a candidate, will be free and fair before deciding whether it is time to act on sanctions. They also want to see more releases of political prisoners, an end to decades of ethnic violence and a severing of military ties with North Korea.
Even with their support, setting U.S. policy toward Myanmar will not be all smooth sailing. While some easing of sanctions can probably be conducted by executive order from the president, other steps will require approval by both houses of Congress.
Some in the Republican-controlled House have accused the Obama administration of moving too far, too fast.
The hawkish Republican leader of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, has called concessions to the military "grossly premature."
Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., a dogged human rights advocate, voiced concern over alleged persecution of Christians in Myanmar. He told The Associated Press that while he was supportive of Suu Kyi, the U.S. should not be naive in its dealings with the government and "reward that which can be taken back in a heartbeat."
Smith said the U.S. had normalized diplomatic and trade relations with authoritarian regimes in Vietnam and China only to see them crack down on activists afterward. http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2012/01/26/in_divided_us_politics_rare_agreement_on_myanmar/

Burma army sends more troops to fight KIA along Shwe pipeline route
Category: News

KIA soldiers who are resisting the strong offensive of Burmese goernment troops in northern Shan State.
More than 1,500 Burmese troops are currently on their way to reinforce government positions in northern Shan state, as the Burmese military continues an offensive against the Kachin Independence Army's (KIA) Eighth Battalion, according to KIA sources in the area.
The KIA's Eighth Battalion presently controls a long stretch of northern Shan State slated to be the route of the Shwe pipeline project, which will deliver oil and gas from Burma's Arakan coast to China's Yunnana region. Currently the Eighth Battalion is under attack at key points along the pipeline route. This includes Namtu, Mandong, Nam Hkam (or Nam Kham) and KIA positions near Muse close to the Chinese border.
KIA officials on the ground in Shan State say that the Burmese army is prioritizing sending troops to the area to capture territory for the Shwe pipeline, a multibillion dollar project that when completed is expected to give Burma's government huge annual revenues.
KIA officials in northern Shan State said that most of the 1,500 troops have already arrived in the state and are currently being deployed to the front lines that surround the KIA's Eighth Battalion.
Today in Muse, a convoy of more than 30 transport trucks carrying troops and supplies arrived from Kachin state, according to eyewitnesses in the area. The newly arrived troops were previously deployed in combat against the KIA’s 27th and 12th battalions in southern Kachin State. The reinforcements belong to Meiktila-based Light Infantry Division No. 99 and Myitkyina-based Northern Regional Military Command, the Kachin News Group learned.
On January 19, as representatives of the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) met with Burmese government representatives in China for the second day of talks, Burmese troops repeatedly opened fire on the KIA's Eighth Battalion positions in the Mandong area. Mandong which is also on the pipeline route stayed in KIA hands, according to sources on the ground.
On January 20, heavy fighting broke out in the Nam Sung area, also controlled by the KIA's Eighth Battalion. According to KIA officials more than 20 Burmese soldiers were killed during this battle.
Shwe pipeline's impact assessments conducted by Western firms
A report published last year by the Shwe Gas Movement, an environmental coalition opposed to the pipeline project, reveals that the two firms tasked to conduct Environmental, Social and Health Impact Assessments (ESHIA) for both of the twin oil and gas pipelines are Western owned.
China National Petroleum Company, the leading firm in the consortium that will build the twin pipeline project, hired the Hong Kong branch of the London headquartered Environmental Resources Management (ERM) to conduct the ESHIA for the oil pipeline. CNPC also hired International Environmental Management Co (IEM), a Canadian owned firm based in Bangkok, to conduct the ESHIA for the gas pipeline.
It is unclear whether either firm predicted the conflict currently unfolding along a good portion of the pipeline's route in northern Shan State.
Originally the twin oil and gas pipelines were supposed to miss most of the KIA controlled territory, however in early 2011 the official pipeline route in Shan state was shifted westward making a near 90 degree turn at Hsipaw where the pipeline route now heads north into KIA territory. Previously the pipeline was slated to continue east at Hsipaw and reach Lashio before heading north to Kunming, a route that would have passed through much less of the KIA’s territory. http://www.kachinnews.com/news/2223-burma-army-sends-more-troops-to-fight-kia-along-shwe-pipeline-route.html
New Mon State Party Vice Chairman Nai Rao Sa will lead a delegation for a second round of peace talks at Mawlamyaing in Mon State on February 1.

Agneepath Review
The thing with film remakes is that you can't view them in a vacuum; they need to co-exist with the originals and comparisons simply cannot be avoided. When the original is a cult classic like the late Mukul S. Anand's Agneepath, the sheer weight of comparisons can tear them apart. Fortunately, then, for debutant director Karan Malhotra, his remake of Agneepath more than lives up to its cult counterpart's status and comes close to being a masterpiece itself.
Praise for the film belongs to director Malhotra and Ila Bedi Datta, who work hard to recast Vijay Dinanath Chauhan's story in a new mould with their adapted screenplay. At the core, it's still the same one, one where Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) finds only the principled Master Dinanath Chauhan standing in his path to taking over the island of Mandwa, and frames him to have him lynched by the villagers. Master Dinanath Chauhan's young son, Vijay Chauhan witnesses his father's murder and swears to avenge it with Kancha's life. Moving away to the city, he rapidly rises through the ranks of the Mafia until he finds himself in a position to challenge Kancha. And then, don Vijay Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) returns to the village he was thrown out of, for the final confrontation with his nemesis.
However, it's the way that the best elements of the old story find their way into the new one that makes one want to stand up and applaud. Malhotra and Datta are supremely judicious in the way that they adapt the classic. Some characters have been done away with, chiefly, Mithun Chakraborty's Krishnan Iyer M.A.. Though some may be disappointed, it is understandable why this is so; Mithun's Krishnan, though a fan-favourite, was more or less a form of comic relief in the original. Malhotra's remake, though, is such an exhilarating action drama from start to finish, that there is simply no space for comic sidesteps. This time around, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan's intense focus is so single-mindedly on Mandwa that you actually come to believe that there isn't a single moment in his life in which Vijay isn't thinking about Kancha.
To that end, Malhotra brings in a new character, Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor), to give Vijay a second nemesis to deal with. While there may be no space for the comedy of Krishnan Iyer here, there certainly is more scope for darkness, and that is what Rauf, as the don of Mumbai, brings, raising Vijay within his ranks, but forever making sure that he stays under his thumb. It is a shocking change, to see Kapoor play a character this dark; however, he more than rises up to the challenge. He relishes the role, digging his teeth deep into it and more than matching up to the writing of the film, so much so that one is inclined to believe that the first half belongs to him.
The film breaks away from the original in its characterisation of Kancha as well. Where the original saw Danny Dengzongpa play it suave as Kancha Cheena, living it up in Mauritius, here Sanjay Dutt is nothing but the personification of pure evil, spouting teachings from the Geeta on one hand, even as he continues to kill and oppress without thought on the other. Though it may have been Dutt's new bald-headed, black-clad look that may have earned him buzz around the film, its safe to say that his performance as the psychotic Kancha is infinitely more shocking than his get-up could ever be.
However, the most amazing break from the original comes from Vijay Dinanath Chauhan himself, a character so intense that he actually scares you at points. In his quest for revenge, Vijay turns into a fantastic manipulator of people, biding his time for fifteen whole years until he finds himself in exactly the right place to have it. The film retains most of the trappings of the original, but then weaves them into the film in such a way that the audiences can't help but be in awe of them. Perhaps the most iconic scene of the original film was that of Amitabh Bachchan sitting in a police station and telling a cop his full name, 'Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, pura naam. Here, when Hrithik finally says that legendary line, in the midst of an exhilarating action sequence, you can't help but stomp your feet.
Critics will hold that Hrithik's performance doesn't match up to that of Bachchan's. But then, Roshan isn't actually trying to recreate that classic growl and stagger. Instead, Hrithik's Vijay Chauhan is a character all his own. He doesn't wear suits and doesn't drive big cars. Instead, he is content living in his small rooftop hut in Dongri, because his single-minded focus is Kancha. Taking centrestage, Hrithik's Vijay speaks little, believing that his actions speak louder. And speak louder, they do. Brilliantly intense and controlled in every step, Hrithik shocks with the sheer force of his performance, so much so that as you glimpse into his face, you actually ache for him to have his revenge.
There are other characters along the way, most of them peripheral, like Om Puri's commissioner Gaitonde, or Priyanka Chopra's Kaali, who plays Vijay's love interest. All of them are played to just the right tone, though. Though some maybe disappointed that Priyanka's role is a rather short one, it should be understood that had it been any longer, the track would interrupted the flow of the core story, as it already does at points.
Zarina Wahab is present as Vijay's mother, and does fairly well for herself in the role originally essayed by Rohini Hattangadi. Young Kanika Tiwari debuts in the role of Vijay's sister Shiksha, but doesn't get much screen time. Deven Bhojani's role is inconsequential, as is Sachin Khedekar's. Instead, amongst the rest of the cast, it is the young Vijay, played by the debutant Arish Bhiwandiwala, who wows with his intensity.
Credit is also due to production designer Sabu Cyril, who carves out the look and feel of the film on a truly epic scale. The opening scenes, in craggy, rocky Mandwa set the pace for the film, and that is carried on to the frenzied surrounds of Mumbai's Dongri, as shown in the film. The Ganpati Visarjan scene, and the final confrontation between Vijay and Kancha on the island of Mandwa, are the highpoints, in terms of sets and looks, ones that action director Abbas Ali Moghul capitalises on, brilliantly. Kiron Deohans and Ravi Chandran work superbly on their cinematography, taking dark tones in the right sequences and splashing Vijay's happier moments with lots of colours, sweeping through the sets.
While Ajay Atul have already earned praise for their soundtrack of the film, especially the sizzling Chikni Chameli, with Katrina Kaif, it is the film's background score that truly impresses. While the original's music was very liberally 'inspired' from the works of Jean-Michel Jarre, this time around, it's an all-original score, one that actually sets the atmosphere and pace for the narrative of the film. There are points where the duo does make faint references to the original, especially a three bar piece when Vijay makes his first kill, but thereafter, this work stays brand-new. Though Chikni Chameli is superb, the film's true musical high point comes with the Ganapati devotional Deva Shree Ganesha, complete with horns and dhols, that sets up for a fantastic action sequence in the film.
That Mukul S. Anand's Agneepath is a cult classic is a fact that even Karan Malhotra, and his producer, Karan Johar, acknowledge, inserting a slate of text at the beginning saying that their film is just a tribute to the original. However, one feels that when they call their new film a tribute and a remake, they are doing their effort a disservice. With the thought that has gone into it, it's more apt to call Karan Malhotra's Agneepath a gritty, raw reimagining of the classic, which is what it is.
Though the original Agneepath has earned itself a cult status, it has done so solely on the back of Amitabh Bachchan's brilliant performance as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan. Indeed, Bachchan as Vijay, came across as a pure force of nature and there isn't a performance that matches up to his sheer intensity. However, at the risk of sounding blasphemous, that performance apart, there isn't much in the film that could qualify as a classic. Though the film relates an epic, larger than life story of the enmity between Vijay Chauhan and Kancha Cheena, it does so at a lax pace, dawdling at times before getting to the final resolution.
Karan Malhotra, though, recognises his story for its scale, for what it was always meant to be, and sets up Agneepath as a true epic right from the opening, on the rocky, sweeping landscapes of Mandwa. The moment that Vijay has been witness to his father's brutal lynching, you know that he will never be the same again. And when he takes his first steps into crime within the first fifteen minutes into the film, you know that there is an epic confrontation coming that will have you on the edge of your seat for the remaining two and a half hours. Though there are a few places where Malhotra stumbles, bringing in a few unnecessary tracks, the way it all comes together at the end, with Hrithik, Sanjay and Rishi dazzling, it isn't hard to see why this new Agneepath may just turn out to be a classic all its own.

We know that the state of the union is good no matter how many Americans are out of work, how many families are counting every penny, how many industries are falling off a cliff and how high the national debt gets. We know it’s good so long as another politician takes a victory lap up to the podium and tells us that it’s all good because he’s here.
Iraq? Nothing to worry about. We just brought all the troops home. Sure it’s breaking up into a civil war, but you won’t hear about it on the news. Osama bin Laden is no longer a threat, but his allies have taken over Egypt and Tunisia, and are moving on Libya. The Taliban’s momentum has been broken and they are on the verge of taking over the government which means they will finally have been defeated. These achievements are a testament to a military which is facing the biggest budget cuts in decades.
The American soldier is a role model to us. I take away his weapons, fire him, put him on trial and force him to marry his bunkmate to show his tolerance, and he never complains because he’s not allowed to. The rest of you need to take a lesson from him. Stop complaining or I’ll send you to a military tribunal.
Now it’s time for an applause break. We need to spend more money funding college degrees and political indoctrination for everyone. More applause. Only by creating more unemployed people with six-figure student debts working at McD’s will we be able to restore the post WW2 economy that was built on manufacturing jobs which my administration is working hard to completely eliminate.
More applause? No you shouldn’t have. And I didn’t get you anything but a monopoly for my buddy Warren Buffett’s rail line. Sure it cost a 100,000 American jobs, but who needs them anyway. We need to keep the promise alive and fight the rich whose irresponsible investing tanked this economy. And the only way we can do that is by going deep into debt with irresponsible investments. That’s why we’ve put new rules in place to hold Wall Street accountable in case they ever borrow more money than they can pay back and we’ve also put new rules into place so the government can borrow as much money as it wants.
The economy is great right now. There are millions of jobs everywhere, even if you can’t see them because they’re invisible jobs. They only come out at night and during State of the Union addresses. In the last 5 minutes over 3 billion jobs have been created. The auto industry used to be on the verge of collapse. It’s still on the verge of collapse but now it’s being subsidized by taxpayers. Now the auto industry is too big to fail, no matter how many Volts it makes and how few people buy them. And just wait till you see the GM Lada that uses Soviet manufacturing processes to create a car that only works one day a month and runs entirely on hot air. Just like me.
I will work with anyone who agrees with me, but fight anyone who disagrees with me through executive orders, appointments that I have no right to make and any other way that I can find to violate the Constitution and appoint myself King of America. Applause? Damn right, you should be applauding. Your applause just created 300 trillion jobs and eliminated all our debt. Why? Because I said so! I’m the King of America!
What we did in Detroit, we can do in Philly, Raleigh and any other place where a bunch of working class white people are worried about their jobs. As long as they are represented by unions and as long as I need the support of those unions, and as long as my good buddy Warren Buffett can’t make any money by putting them out of work, and as long as the Chinese keep lending us money, then I will subsidize every industry until we beat the Chinese.
I don’t know why you’re all applauding, even I think that’s stupid and I used to own a Zune. I still haven’t learned how many states there are and even I know that’s not going to work. I believe money is made by leprechauns which is why it’s so green, but even I’m not serious about the crap I just said. If I was really into creating white working class jobs, I wouldn’t have killed Keystone XL. Look, Warren Buffett’s secretary is applauding. Isn’t that sweet?
The real problem is that we’re outsourcing too many jobs, that’s why I just signed a bunch of trade agreements that will make it easier for South Korea to sell their products here. It’s time we stopped giving tax breaks to companies that ship jobs overseas and start subsidizing them, like my stimulus plan which created more jobs in China than it did here. Applause? I didn’t know Beijing had their own congressional delegation. Hell, we invested 2 billion in Brazilian offshore oil drilling in support of my left wing buddies in the gov over there. If that doesn’t create American jobs, I don’t know what will.
And hey, you guys are gonna think this is funny, but remember when we loaned half a billion to make electric cars in Finland? Yeah, Al Gore loved that one, he was an investor. But don’t pay attention to anything I’m saying. As I stand here today, I vow that I will bring the jobs back to America. They just have to go through China, South Korea and Finland first. When they’re done with them, we get first dibs. Indonesian scout’s honor.
I will go anywhere to open up new markets to American products. Like Martha’s Vineyard and the golf course. Thanks to my inability to hit a golf ball anywhere besides a lake, a thousand Americans are hard at work in Shanghai making new golf balls for me to hit. And it doesn’t end there. German companies are forming partnerships with community colleges to shoot lasers. Chinese wind turbines are making Finnish cars grow Arugula. All we need is more teachers unions to make it happen.
We have told every state to raise their standards which means more kids who can’t read or add being promoted from class to class so the schools don’t lose Federal funding. And now we need to start paying teachers more. I don’t care if you can’t afford to keep your home and pay property taxes, the teacher’s unions need more Viagra benefits. Statistics show that a great teacher can teach her students how to cheat off each other’s tests just like I did at Harvard. If we just pay teachers 250,000 a year, then every student will be able to cheat their way to Harvard just like me.
The best way to create more American jobs is by legalizing illegal aliens and paying for their college educations. Applause? By the Prophet’s beard, you people really will applaud anything. We need to kill puppies. Applause. It’s time to start burning down more churches. Applause. If we kill every tenth person there will be more jobs for the survivors. Applause. Sometimes I’m embarrassed at how easy this is.
The rate of crossings from Mexico has gone down ever since I tanked the economy, and I pledge to you, if you give me another four years, every Mexican who doesn’t work for the government will be back home trading in his dollars for pesos before American currency is completely worthless. That’s why we need to legalize them right now and ply them with benefits so they don’t run away before they get a chance to vote for me a third time as El Dictador.
But that’s not all. I am opening millions of acres for offshore oil drilling. Not! I am also investing more money in training children to harness the power of positive thinking. Scientists at Federally funded labs estimate that every child who thinks positively can create enough power to light up an entire city. The only problem is figuring out how to stick the plugs into his head while we stick him in some sort of Matrix. And that’s where our Federally funded labs come in. That is why I am asking Congress not to gut funding for the Matrix.
Take a look at Wilson E. Picket-Rammsby over there. Born in a shack in an up-for-grabs district in North Carolina, he had no arms or legs. Ever since my stimulus plan he works at the Buffett-Gore Wind Turbine Making Co. which is entirely financed by taxpayers, Wilson’s job is to take ‘Made in America’ stickers and affix them with his mouth to imported Chinese wind turbines.
I promised Wilson that I would not walk away from workers like him. I will not allow China to buy more Chinese wind turbines than we would buy Chinese wind turbines with their money. I will not allow Germany to seize the lead from us in wind turbines or paper kite manufacturing or aura beaming technology. We’ve subsidized oil companies long enough. It’s time to start subsidizing Al Gore.
Best of all while the Navy will be losing a whole bunch of ships and Marines, they will be purchasing all that clean energy so that our armed forces will have even less money and Al Gore will have even more money.
Now that I spent 15 minutes discussing tax credits and incentives for companies owned by my friends and my supporters, let me completely switch topics and state firmly that it’s time to stop the bailouts, the handouts and the copouts. After we pass my Bailouts, Handouts and Copouts plan to force the Navy to buy Finnish electric submarines from a company co-owned by some guy who hosted a fundraiser for me last week. It’s possible the submarines don’t work underwater, but they’re painted green which means they’re good for the environment.
We’ve all paid the price for lenders who sold mortgages to people who couldn’t afford them. And by that I mean the lenders paid me money and helped finance my campaign. That’s why we need smart regulation. Regulations that are so smart that they automatically exempt me.
Rules that prevent Gibson from making guitars, prevent Canada from selling us cheap oil, and prevent businesses from creating new jobs don’t destroy the free market. They make the free market work better by taking it out back and putting a bullet in its head, just like my stepfather, the Colonel, used to do to dissidents back home in Indonesia.
Four years after the economic meltdown, I am asking my Attorney General to take some time from being investigated by Congress for shipping assault rifles to Mexican druglords in a plot to subvert the Constitution, and form a special super commission of fact-finding investigators to root out financial corruption that we’re not responsible for and make them give us our cut.
This proposal is in no way belated election pandering or a way to shake down Wall Street firms into donating to us. They’re already donating to us. Applause. Oh yeah, they’re donating to us like a Mexican drug dealer with a brand new AK-47.
Because of all the loopholes and shelters and basements in the tax code, Warren Buffett pays a lower tax rate than his secretary. Unfortunately other people besides Warren Buffett are also benefiting from these loopholes and we need to close them so that only Warren Buffett benefits from them.
I’m a Democrat, but I believe what Abraham Lincoln believed, that habeas corpus should be suspended, First Ladies should be able to spend as much money as they want during a war and that some races are inferior to others. But most of all, I believe that you cannot fool all of the people all of the time—but I am hoping that I can do it at least long enough to get reelected.
Losing the war in Iraq has allowed me to shift the war to Afghanistan where we are losing the war from a decisive position of strength. A wave of change has washed across the Middle East. Women are running for their lives and the Al Qaeda flag is flying in Libya. Iran is on the verge of getting the bomb. And I just want to take credit for all of it.
The renewal of American leadership can be felt around the globe. Now the world knows that they don’t have to take us seriously anymore. We’re not even paper tigers, we’re more like paper tigers who set themselves on fire and then the chief paper tiger gets up and makes a speech about how much fire has done for the standing of paper tigers in restoring human dignity around the world.
To keep pace with our new global role, I have called for eliminating most of the parts of the military that don’t buy clean energy from my supporters or bomb the people that the President of France orders me to bomb as incidental to my core mission of destroying America.
And I would just like to finish by invoking the inspirational words of a truly great American, Eldridge Cleaver of the Black Panther Party who wrote in his his autobiography, Soul on Ice, that he began his career as a rapist by practicing on black girls in the ghetto before moving on to other prey. Like him, I began practicing on Chicago and then moved on to the Great State of Illinois and then to America.
Wow last day ko na knina sa practicum ko! yay! ang tagal dn pla ng 300hrs. hehe malapit na pala matapos ung hearstrings? hm, may pasok kc me kya dvd mode nlng me huhu. excited na for another ep of city hunter! enjoy the friday night! xoxo xiao sakura.
The Honey You Should Never Buy - It May Be Tainted with Lead and Antibiotics
Bees have been dying off around the world for a decade now from a phenomenon called Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. A third of the U.S. food supply depends on the honeybee
The collapse of bee colonies is probably multifactorial, rather than a response to one type of toxic assault; one major factor is the toxicity of systemic pesticides, such as Clothianidin (made by Bayer)
One Colorado beekeeper named Tom Theobald exposed the EPA’s complicity with Bayer in allowing Clothianidin to market without honeybee safety studies
An average of six different pesticides were found in hives across the country, with one hive testing positive for 31 different pesticides, in one recent study
More than 75 percent of the honey on American supermarket shelves is not honey at all, but rather an ultra-processed mixture of sugar-water, malt sweeteners, corn or rice syrup, jaggery, barley malt sweetener and other additives, smuggled in from China and tainted with illegal antibiotics and heavy metals, such as lead
By Dr. Mercola
Bees have been dying off around the world for more than a decade now, a phenomenon that has been named "Colony Collapse Disorder," or CCD.
The U.S. and the U.K. both reported losing a third of their honeybees in 2010. Italy lost half.
The die-offs have spread to China and India, in addition to many other countries.
A third of the U.S. food supply requires the assistance of the honeybee.
The collapse of bee colonies is probably multifactorial, rather than a response to one type of toxic assault.
Although experts don't yet understand all of the underlying factors and how they interact to cause our pollinators to disappear, they agree about one thing: if we allow this to continue, our already-limited global food supply is at risk, which means more than 7 billion humans occupying this planet are at risk as well.
The common honeybee pollinates 130 different crops in the U.S. alone, including fruits, vegetables and tree nuts.
Without our bees, almonds, pumpkins, watermelons and other varieties of melon, and even vanilla, could completely disappear.
Haagen-Dazs donated $250,000 to research into bee colony collapse disorder because it says the honeybees are responsible for 24 of its 60 ice cream flavors, including strawberry, toasted pecan and banana split.
As usual, at the core of the problem is big industry, which is blinded by greed and enabled by a corrupt governmental system that permits the profit-driven sacrifice of our environment. Unfortunately, this motivation reflects an extreme shortsightedness about the long-term survival of the human race, as well as of our planet. Not only are commercial agricultural practices harming honeybee colonies, but your own health is being compromised by deceptive marketing practices about the "honey" you buy, some of which isn't really honey at all, despite what it says on the label.
Honey: Nectar of the Gods
Pure, natural, unfiltered raw honey has an abundance of medicinal and nutritional uses, including the following:
A bounty of nutrition, including enzymes, antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and minerals Promotes the growth of friendly bacteria in your intestinal tract Good for your skin
Helps with occasional sleeplessness Promotes heart health by reducing homocysteine levels Tames allergies
Can help fight viruses, such as herpes, and bacteria, such as that present in chronic sinusitis Helps sooth a cough Helps prevent tooth decay
A special kind of honey that has healing benefits far exceeding that of ordinary honey is called Manuka honey. Manuka honey is made by bees that feed off the flowers of the Manuka bush, a medicinal plant native to New Zealand. Fake honey is unfortunately common in this era of food manipulation and control. Some Chinese brokers sell a mixture of sugar water, malt sweeteners, corn or rice syrup, jaggery, barley malt sweetener or other additives, and label it "honey". A recent report by Food Safety News reveals just how often they get away with this trickery.
Is Your Honey Fake?
In a new report by Food Safety News, more than 75 percent of the honey on American supermarket shelves may be ultra-processed—to the point that all inherent medicinal properties are completely gone—and then smuggled into the country by the barrel drum. Nearly all of this fake honey is made in China. Some of these brokers will even create bogus country of origin papers. All 60 jars of "honey" tested by FSN came back negative for pollen (including Sue Bee and Winnie the Pooh brands), which is a clear sign of ultra-processing.
According to FSN:
"The removal of these microscopic particles from deep within a flower would make the nectar flunk the quality standards set by most of the world's food safety agencies. The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others have also ruled that without pollen, there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources."
Millions of pounds of honey that have been banned by the European Union are being smuggled into the U.S. from China. Much of this honey is tainted with illegal antibiotics, including chloramphenicol, which can cause DNA damage and cancer, and heavy metals like lead. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that any product that's been ultra-filtered and no longer contains pollen IS NOT honey.
In their investigation, FSN discovered the following:
76 percent of honey samples bought at grocery stores (such as TOP Food, Safeway, QFC, Kroger, Harris Teeter, etc.) were absent of pollen
77 percent of the honey from big box stores (like Costco, Sam's Club, Walmart, and Target) were absent of pollen
100 percent of the honey sampled from drug stores (like Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and CVS Pharmacy) were absent of pollen
The good news is, all of the samples from farmers markets, co-ops, and natural stores like Trader Joe's had the full, proper compliment of pollen, as did organic brands from common grocery stores. But fake honey—the sorry substitute that it is—might be the ONLY thing even remotely resembling honey that you'll be able to get if we don't find a way to save our honeybees from total global collapse.
HUMANS are Casing the Demise of the Bees
Each year, commercial beekeepers have reported unprecedented losses. Steve Ellis, secretary of the National Honey Bee Advisory Board and a beekeeper for 35 years, had so many abnormal bee die-offs that he'll qualify for disaster relief from the USDA.
The main theories are the following:
Malnutrition of the bees due to destruction of their food supply, causing irreparable damage to their immune systems, which makes them more vulnerable to toxic exposures and pathogens, like viruses and fungi
Toxic pesticides, especially the newer systemic pesticides, insecticides, and genetically engineered crops, are a massive source of toxic exposure to the bees
Microwaves from cellular phones have been shown to cause CCD within 10 days, apparently by affecting the bees' communication with the hive and disrupting their navigational ability
Changing global climate, drought, and migratory stress brought about by moving bee colonies long distances to provide pollination services
The EPA claims that new systemic pesticides are safer for humans because farmers can use less of them. However, experiments show that agricultural chemicals that are safe for bees when used alone are lethal in combination. Farmers increasingly combine sprays. They also destroy nearly all flowering weeds, depriving bees of essential nutrients from different kinds of pollen.
Bee Very Afraid...
While much has been made over the "mystery" surrounding CCD, the problem began shortly after neurotoxic pesticides, which are known to be particularly toxic to honeybees, took over the global insecticide market. These relatively new pesticides are called neonicotinoids. Two prominent examples, Imidacloprid and Clothianidin, are used as seed treatments in hundreds of crops.
Virtually all of today's genetically engineered Bt corn is treated with neonicotinoids. A Purdue University study found multiple sources of pesticide exposure for honeybees living near agricultural fields, including high levels of Clothianidin in agricultural machinery exhaust, in the soil of unplanted fields near those planted with Bt corn, and on dandelions growing in those fields. The chemicals were also found in dead bees near hive entrances and in pollen stored in the hives.
Bee colonies began disappearing in the U.S. shortly after EPA allowed these new, toxic insecticides to be used. Even the EPA itself admits that "pesticide poisoning" is a likely cause of the collapse of bee colonies.
These insecticides are highly toxic to bees because they are systemic, water soluble, and very pervasive. They get into the soil and groundwater where they can accumulate and remain for many years and present long-term toxicity to the hive. They enter the vascular system of the plant and are carried to all parts of it, as well as to the pollen and nectar.
These chemicals affect insects' central nervous systems in ways that are cumulative and irreversible. Even minute amounts can have profound effects over time. Foraging insects may become disoriented and unable to find their way back to the hive.
Jim Frazier from Penn State sampled hives from across the U.S. and found an average of six different pesticides in each hive, with one hive testing positive for 31 different pesticides, some of which are of the systemic varieties. Beekeepers everywhere are concerned for their own livelihood, in addition to being fearful of the broader implications of CCD. But one small Colorado beekeeper has served as a one-man sting operation in exposing the EPA's negligence on this issue.

Courageous Beekeeper Battles Negligent Regulators on Behalf of Bees
Colorado beekeeper Tom Theobald became concerned about the effects systemic pesticides were having on his bee colonies. Theobald discovered that EPA allowed Bayer Crop Science, manufacturer of Clothianidin, to market its pesticide for public use without safety studies. Clothianidin has been used commercially for eight years now, with no good safety studies to back it up. Theobald uncovered the documents proving that Congress gave Bayer a thumbs-up to market their product while awaiting the results of a safety study, promised to be complete within 18 months.
And guess who conducts and funds honeybee studies?
The pesticide companies themselves… the fox is again guarding the henhouse. The EPA merely receives the report from the pesticide company, has its scientists make a recommendation, and then EPA administrators make a decision about product safety, supposedly based on good science. In this case, there is NO good science to be found—at least coming from Bayer.
The supposedly scientific research by Bayer proved to be woefully inadequate. Bayer performed the study on one 2.5-acre plot of land planted with canola seed. However, this is a mere fraction of the area foraged by a typical bee colony. In fact, the average area foraged by such a colony is 28,000 acres! Theobald called Bayer's study a "mockery of science" because it was nowhere near an accurate representation of the bees' natural habitat.
So, Theobald wrote an article for the July 2010 issue of Bee Culture, which created quite the buzz. The EPA changed their tone in response to his article, admitting the Bayer study was deficient. Nevertheless, they haven't pulled Clothianidin from the market. According to the Pesticide Action Network:
"Governments in Italy, Germany, France and elsewhere have already taken action against neonicotinoids to protect their pollinators. And beekeepers there are reporting recovery. Yet regulators in the U.S. remain paralyzed, apparently captive to industry-funded science and a regulatory framework that finds chemicals innocent until proven guilty."
No Simple Answers—Persistence is Key
Saving the honeybee will require much more than removing one or two pesticides from the market. It will require a complete change in the mindset and values of industry, and the regulators they hold captive. There is no force for change greater than that fueled by public outrage, so I encourage you to spread the word. Educate your friends, your family… your grocery bagger!
If the goal of pesticides is to increase food yield to more easily feed 7 billion human beings, this goal falls flat on its face if it leads to the collapse of our food chain.
As Tom Theobald says, we can eliminate this one product, maybe, but that won't solve the problem. In a year or two, there will just be another equally dangerous chemical, unless we can change the conditions that lead to the problem. And this means we must yell loud enough to awaken our government from its stupor.
Some folks are doing just that. Honeybee sanctuaries are springing up everywhere, as the award-winning documentary Queen of the Sun shows. Many city dwellers are becoming smalltime backyard beekeepers. If you are interested in supporting the cause, you can check out some of the following websites to guide you in how you can help.
My sincere apologies to all those, especially my granddaughters: Lara, Kameko & Sakura, who have played or tried to play Petville, Castleville & Hidden Chronicles with me. I cannot load these games, even though I updated my Adobe Flash to 11. I had to stop Cityville because it required funds everyday to keep up my city. Maybe my Internet Explorer 9, which I had to get because of auto Microsoft updates, is a factor. Some banks will not update to 9. Any help from anyone, anywhere is welcome.
