Booker, Mary

Funeral services for Mary Booker, 67, will be held Tuesday September 11th at 12 noon at Chapel of Reids Funeral Home, Public viewing will be held Monday 10AM-7PM. Reids Funeral Home of Dillwyn in charge.

Stearnes, Mary Katherine

Mary Katherine “Kitty” Stearnes, 75, died September 7th at her home in Charlotte Court House. Funeral services will be held 2 PM Monday at the New Hope United Methodist Church with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The Browning Duffer Funeral Home, Keysville, in charge of arrangements.

LaCrosse Man Charged with Embezzlement

A Lacrosse man is being accused of embezzling money from a Mecklenburg County business.

Police say that 62 year old Riggie Clay was indicted on 31 embezzlement charges recently in connection with the November 2011 incident at Murlo Paper and Plastics, Inc.

Authorities say the time of the investigation focused on a three year period. There’s no word on the amount of money allegedly taken.

Habitat Dedicates 22nd Home

The Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity dedicated it’s 22nd home yesterday afternoon.

The home, located in the Sayler’s Creek area of Prince Edward County, was built by numerous volunteers for Helen Robinson.

During the event Robinson expressed her thankfulness for the volunteers, donations, and help from the community.

Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, volunteer Christian ministry that partners with qualified families, volunteers, and donors to provide housing for needy families in the Farmville Area.

VDOT to Hold Hearing on Proposed Back Hampden Sydney Road Project

VDOT will hold a design public hearing this month on a proposed project to reconstruct part of Back Hampden Sydney Road in Prince Edward County.

The reconstruction will take place on the portion of the road that crosses route 460. There’s no word on when the project could start.

The hearing will be held Tuesday, September 25th from 4-6 PM at the VDOT Farmville Shop at 1202 Andrews Drive in Farmville.

Longwood Set to Dedicate New Bedford Hall

Longwood University is slated to dedicate it’s newly renovated Bedford Hall this week.

Located on the north end of campus, the building will house the University’s theater, art, and graphic design departments.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gas prices are expected to start backing down after they stayed fairly constant in Virginia over the last week. In Virginia, AAA Mid-Atlantic says the price of a gallon of regular gasoline now averages $3.69 statewide. That's the same as last week and 20 cents higher than a year ago.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Lottery says the owner of a $100,000 prize-winning ticket for the March 26 Cash 5 day drawing had better cash it by 5 p.m. Sept. 24 or it will be worthless. The ticket was sold at the Happy Shopper store in suburban Richmond. The winning numbers were 8-19-23-28-31.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - Colonial Williamsburg is offering free online access to an electronic field trip examining the country's political system and election history. The program, called "The Will of the People" will be available for no cost this month. It examines the presidential election of 1800

NEW YORK (AP) - By all accounts, a National Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center will be impressive, but it has an impressive price tag too. The foundation that runs the memorial estimates that once the roughly $700 million project is complete, it will cost $60 million a year to operate.

HSC Cross Country Takes Fifth at W&L Invitational
LEXINGTON, VA - The Cross Country team finished fifth at the W&L Invitational on Saturday.

Andrew Stoddard (Richmond, VA / Mills E. Godwin) took sixth place overall in 30:08 and, like clockwork, took the top overall spot on the Tigers squad.

OXFORD, Ohio – The Longwood University field hockey team dropped a 6-4 decision at Miami University (Ohio) (1-4) on Saturday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio. The Lancers (0-6) will remain in Oxford to take on Ball State in a neutral-site contest on Sunday, September 9 at 12 p.m.
