Another strong indicator of infiltration from Bangladesh is the increase in the Muslim population in West Bengal. In 1951, the Hindu and Muslim population in West Bengal was 79.40 per cent Hindu and 18.63 per cent Muslim, which changed to 77.10 per cent Hindu and 21.55 per cent Muslim in 1981, and reached 72.90 per cent Hindu and 25.37 per cent Muslim in 2001. From North and South 24 Parganas, traversing Nadia, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Malda till North Dinajpur, a strong Muslim-dominated corridor has emerged and it could well be the kingmaker, playing a crucial role in the imminent change of political guard in the state.
The strength of the community has risen to 33.2 per cent in South 24 Parganas, 25 per cent in North 24 Parganas, 25.2 per cent in Nadia, 35.1 per cent in Birbhum, 63.7 per cent in Murshidabad, 49.7 per cent in Malda and 47.4 per cent in North Dinajpur, with a sizeable Muslim population in South Dinajpur, Howrah, Birbhum and Cooch Behar.
"A spurt of new mosques and the restoration of older ones implies an increase in the Muslim population. So does the growth in madarsas and the various sops given by the state government. This rise can't only be a result of a population boom. Bangladeshi Muslims have been settling in the state," says De. Khadija Bibi says, "We are not scared to live in a non-Islamic country. We are safer and happier here than in Bangladesh. There is no place for fear."

The Congress wants to protect its vote bank of illegal immigrants in Assam by fudging documents to help them become Indian citizens. That's what explains the state Government's recent proposal for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) through house-to-house enumeration. The Citizenship Act was amended in 2004 exclusively for Assam on the basis of the Assam Accord. The NRC was to be updated by inviting claims from direct descendants of those figuring in the 1951 NRC or 1971 electoral rolls for Assam instead of the door-to-door enumeration process applied across the country.

Council of Canadians' National Chairperson Maude Barlow and Health Care Campaigner Adrienne Silnicki joined other Council staff, members and chapter activists in Victoria, B.C. earlier this month as provincial and territorial premiers met to talk about the 2014 Health Care Accord and the future delivery of health care services in Canada.
At the meeting, premiers condemned the Harper government for its unilateral funding announcement that will limit the amount of money provinces can expect from the federal government to deliver health care services. The Harper government hoped the announcement would put an end to financial negotiations for federal health transfers. By stepping away from the Canada Health Act and not tying federal funds to national standards, the Harper government closed the door on any opportunity to improve Canada's health care system through the new accord.
Public health care advocates were at the Premiers' meeting in force, reminding politicians of Canadians' strong support for medicare. Young activists lined up outside meeting, holding up red umbrellas to tell politicians that "medicare has us all covered." That evening, the Council of Canadians joined the BC Health Coalition in hosting a public forum about the 2014 Health Care Accord and what it means to Canadians. Keynote speakers at the event included Maude Barlow, Diana Gibson of the Parkland Institute, and Mike Luff of the National Union of Public & General Employees.
The Council of Canadians will be working with public health care allies across the country to sound the alarm about medicare's uncertain future. We will lobby governments to take a strong stand in support of this valued social program, and push the federal government to assume a leadership role that strengthens medicare – not abandons it – in the lead-up to the signing of the 2014 accord.

It is gratifying to read the readers' comments to Rutland Herald articles about various city hall bunglings. It makes us feel we here in this FB community are not alone in questioning--with healthy doses of skepticism--the ineffective machinations of mayor, aldermen and some city nonprofits that we pay for, like the RDP.
Case in point: CCV parking downtown. Christine Krumka's 1/27/12 Herald piece says "Community College of Vermont students are not welcome to park in the Rutland school administration’s lot at the corner of West and Church streets or in the lot behind the city’s Veterans of Foreign Wars post" and "But for public, on-the-street parking, Ettori [of CCV] said the college can’t restrict cars lined up on Church or Wales streets at night." and "On Monday night, Rice [of CCV] said the [CCV] lot was so full, school district employees couldn’t get their cars out."
Do you all realize that this parking disaster follows months of "planning" by the aldermen and the RDP (Rutland Downtown Partnership headed by Mike Coppinger) to develop a solution for downtown parking? Was it a really a surprise to them that LOTS of CCV students would need places to park? Wouldn't that parking lot on West St that the city recently "traded" to Mark Foley now be an income stream for the city, with all those parking meters we also gave away to Mr. Foley in that trade? Since the RDP did not attend any of the months of "planning" meetings by the aldermen working on a downtown parking solution, guess the CCV student parking problems (and potential city income) weren't even on RDP's radar.

When this project was first introduced to the community, I believe the subject of "where do these students park" came up. Apparently no one answered it correctly, but----oh well. 50 spots in the deck???? I don't think so. What should have been done was to anticipate the MAXIMUM number of students that could possibly be enrolled or in class at one time----and make the permit contingent on providing that number of parking spaces somewhere----and designate them for that purpose. Does that sound like something that a CCV student could figure out? The solution certainly was NOT to build it first and then figure out where everyone was going to park-------but that was not politically correct----soi here we are.

Are any arrangements being made to protect parking for the bars and restaurants on Wales St. Times are tough enough for these establishments and having no parking within walking distance will certainly not help. Downtown Development are you working on solutions? BTW. Is Rutland still trying for downtown, upper floor housing options- get some people down there!
